Barbara Binns’s session, “Enhancing Multicultural collections”
Description: One size does not fit all for clothes…or books. Many reluctant readers have simply not found books that represent their reality. Libraries continue growing as places of diversity and inclusion, where youth of under-represented groups (people of color, with disabilities, different sexual orientations, etc.) find literature that reflects their life stories. Author B. A. Binns shares ways authors of multicultural young adult books use the genre to enhance empathy while promoting literacy.
Barbara hopes attendees will be able to: develop action plans to find and use multi-cultural books for their reader populations.
Jen F. learned “[about] a lot of the independent publishers/authors” an plans to “subscribe to Smashwords, I hope to get you a book trailer!”
Michele K. learned “good sources to find multicultural books” and plans to “look at more independent authors.”
Nancy B. learned “ways to find multicultural books” and plans to “increase the multicultural books in my collection.”
